Welcome to STEM Takes Flight at Virginia’s Community Colleges!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Due to the application extension, NASA Research Experience notifications will be sent in early April.
  • Based on feedback from our community colleges, we are making the eligibility requirements relating to graduation dates more flexible for the STEM Takes Flight NASA Research Experiences for Community College students. Previously Virginia community college students were required to be current sophomores not graduating prior to December 2016. As of February 16, 2016, the revision permits Virginia community college students completing their sophomore year in May or June of 2016 to also be considered.

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) in partnership with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), NASA Langley Research Center and NASA Wallops Flight Facility and with the strong support of the Virginia Governor’s office, is offering the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Takes Flight at Virginia’s Community Colleges initiative. STEM Takes Flight provides a suite of programs for Virginia community college students pursuing STEM majors (exclusive of allied health and business) and faculty in STEM disciplines statewide. Opportunities include $5,000 mentored scholarships, paid onsite research experiences at NASA Langley and NASA Wallops, paid industry internships, new courses and a NASA residential faculty professional development workshop. See links below for details on each of the STEM Takes Flight opportunities. The program is underwritten in large part by a two-year NASA Space Grant competitive award.

    Program Goals

  • To foster enhanced community college retention in STEM academic tracks through graduation or transfer to a four-year institution.
  • To strengthen VSGC’s relationships with and build NASA linkages with/for Virginia’s community colleges.

Supporting objectives are to nurture diversity; to pipeline STEM students to their next academic and workplace steps; and to foster STEM career awareness and workplace skills.
